The 1978 Amco Cup

The South Sydney Rabbitohs took on the Western Division Rams in round 2 of the Amco Cup at Leichhardt Oval on the 17th of May 1978.

This brilliant signed program was sent to us by Steve ‘SSTID’ Moore.

The Rabbitohs won the match 22-9, eliminating the NSW country team from the competition.

The curtain raiser that day was a round 2 Amco Shield clash that saw Benedict College, Auburn take on the Patrician Brothers, Fairfield team. The two number 6s that day would both go on to play first grade – Michael Pobjie (Rabbitoh #703) & the legendary Parramatta Eel Peter Sterling.

Gary Wright wore the number 15 in the round 2 clash.

The Bunnies went on to defeat Northern Division 9-5 in round 3 at Scully Park, Tamworth before crashing out in a narrow 11-9 loss to the Manly Silvertails at Lang Park, Brisbane.

Manly would go on to win the NSWRL competition later in the year beating the Sharks 16-0 in the famous Grand Final replay.
