We lost a true Rabbitoh on the 8th of May 2022 when Ronald Alfred Brown also known as ‘Porky’ passed away.
Ronald ‘Porky’ Brown was born on the 6th of August 1933 in Waterloo and raised in Garden Street, Redfern. He played rugby league with the Alexandria Rovers around 1950 and the team he loved was of course the mighty South Sydney Rabbitohs.
Ronald was Rabbitohs TV co-host Darren Browns grand fathers brother. Ron was the younger brother of the Australian Hall of Fame boxer Darby Brown and the uncle of Les Brown (Darrens dad).
Darren Brown said “My pop Timmy was older than Darby and Porky. There were 8 siblings in total, six brothers and 2 sisters with the oldest to youngest being Billie, Thomas (aka Timmy), Phyllis, Thelma, James, Leslie (aka Darby), Porky and Keith.”
Ron had 6 children, 21 grandchildren, 39 great grandchildren and 15 great great grandchildren.
“3 (Darby, Porky Keithy) of them fought on the 1 card at the Sydney Stadium. 2 out of 3 won. Darby was odds on to win and got beat. Only recently Darby was inducted into the Australian Boxing Hall of Fame.”
Rons son Gary has fond memories of watching his mum Irene and dad dance. “They were extremely good, and I watched in awe, they were like Ginger Rogers and Fred Astair.”
A Tribute To Ron – By Josephine Vella
A cherished man you were
Until the very end,
When you fought with all you had
For your body to defend.
You had a fighting spirit
And a spark that would ignite,
When you’d hear your favourite music
And your feet seemed to take flight.
Your love for ice-cream was known
And like a little boy,
Your face would light up when
A bowl would bring you joy.
Glory Glory to South Sydney
The team who stole your heart,
As a lifetime fan of whom
You cheered on, through every part.
You’ll be forever missed
But now you’re there up high,
Dancing cheek to cheek with Irene
In a now more beautiful sky.
