Flegg Finds Form – Cup Conquer Magpies – Pathways Wrap

The Rabbitohs Jersey Flegg team bounced back in style yesterday at Ironmark High Performance Centre, Redfern beating the Wests Tigers 24-20.

In my preview of Saturdays pathways triple header I called the Flegg teams season ‘dismal’ but I am now rethinking that description after our boys came out firing and got a much needed win against a team well above them on the ladder.

Team captain Thomas Giles opened the scoring in the first minute of the game then a double to super talented lock Tallis Duncan and another try to skilful back rower Louis Grossemy made it 4 tries for the home team.

Tyrone Munro © Rabbitohs TV

The visitors answered with 4 tries of their own but 4 goals from 4 attempts by star winger Tyrone Munro was the winning difference in the score line.

This Jersey Flegg victory was the first time that close mates Thomas Giles and Lachlan ‘Choc’ Gale have started at front row together this season. The former Australian Schoolboys representatives and Marcellin College students took on a Dragons pack rated the best in the competition and dominated them in the middle. Love your work Tommy & Choc.

Lachlan Gale and Thomas Giles.

Next Saturday 11th June at 11.15am our Flegg team face a tough test when they travel down to Collegians Sporting Complex, Wollongong to take on a top 4 Dragons team.

Josh Mansour aka ‘The Sauce’. © Rabbitohs TV

Our Knock On Effect NSW Cup team were too good for the Magpies, winning a high scoring game 36-32.

Powerhouse Souths winger Izaac Thompson crossed for 2 tries in the first 10 minutes to get his team away to a flying start. The tide then turned with the Magpies scoring 3 tries of their own before a Josh Mansour try made it 3 tries a piece at the half time break.

In the 2nd half another try to Mansour aka ‘The Sauce’ and four pointers to Ben Lovett and Shaquai Mitchell combined with some superb goal kicking by Isaiah Tass was enough to get the chocolates (Darrell Lea of course!).

My co-hosts Darren Brown and Grant Chappell watched most of the action online via the NSWRL live stream on Facebook and they reported that Shaquai Mitchell and Davvy Moale led from up front, Ben Lovett ran some good lines in attack, Isaiah Tass took plenty of strong carries. Pete Mamouzelos and Dean Hawkins had some classy touches too.

Chaps also told me “I’m up at Coffs Harbour watching my daughter play in the Oztag State Cup for the Rabbitohs u9s. Buddy Gordons daughter plays in the same team and he told me that he drove up here to Coffs on Friday to watch his girls first game then flew back on Saturday morning to play at Redfern for the NSW Cup team off the bench then caught the bus back up to Coffs to see his daughter play on Sunday morning.

That’s a 1086km round trip, well done Buddy you’re a great dad.

Next Saturday at 1pm our NSW Cup team will follow the Flegg game in Wollongong and take on a Dragons team that sit below them on the ladder.

Our Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership team went down 16-8 to the Central Coast Roosters and are still seeking that elusive first win of the season.

The Rabbitohs 2022 Womens team.

WNRL prop Ellie Johnston and Therese Aiton off the bench both scored for the Bunnies but 3 tries and 2 goals from the visitors was enough to sink our hopes of securing the 2pts.

Next weeks game gives our womens team a 9 day turn around and hopes of victory will be high when they take on the winless Wenty Magpies at the NSWRL Centre of Excellence at 7pm on Monday 13th June.

Saturday was the last home game at Redfern for any of our pathways teams in 2022.

Rocky recently attended the Souths Players Association (SPA) reunion in April and was on the field in the guard of honour when the Rabbitohs defeated the Dragons 24-12 at Accor Stadium.

In our former players chat group we are all expressing our extreme sadness at the loss of a great friend and teammate.

Rest in peace Rocky, a truly great Souths man.
