Blake, Lachy, Pete & Jaxson – From Flegg To First Grade

We labelled them The Bunnies Baby Spine when the news broke yesterday that this young gun trio would be playing first grade together for the first time on Saturday night when the Rabbitohs take on the Dragons at Sunshine Coast Stadium.

Blake Taaffe, Lachlan Ilias & Peter Mamouzelos along with Jaxson Paulo were all part of the victorious Jersey Flegg Rabbitohs team that defeated the Raiders in the grand final at Bankwest Stadium in 2019.

Blake Taaffe will wear the number 1 jersey in his 5th appearance in first grade as he takes over the fullback role from the suspended Latrell Mitchell.

Peter Mamouzelos will wear the number 9 to give Damien Cook a rest & play his 3rd game in the top grade.

Lachlan Ilias will wear the number 7 to give Reyno a break before the finals & make his NRL debut.

Jaxson Paulo is the most established player from that Flegg squad having scored 10 tries in his 21 games for Souths. He will wear the number 5 & had a blinder on the right wing last week against the Roosters.

Lachlan Ilias

21 year old Lachlan Ilias grew up in the inner west of Sydney & played his junior footy with the Leichhardt Wanderers as a Tigers junior.

He played rugby union at Trinity Grammar school on Saturdays & league on Sundays.

Lachy was in the Tigers system but had a huge injury set back when he suffered a broken fibula bone in his leg playing footy.

The Tigers subsequently made the decision to release him, the Rabbitohs swooped & he’s been with the club ever since.

We have a connection here on Rabbitohs Radio with the Taaffe family. Chaps is close mates with Blakes’ uncle Brad & father Darren.

Mavos’ wife Sam is from La Perouse & grew up with Blakes mum Dorothy & dad Darren.

Peter Mamouzelos

20 year old Peter Mamouzelos is a Souths junior & played his junior footy for the Maroubra Lions.

When we asked him about being in lockdown with his mates Lachy & Taaffy he said ‘we do everything together go to dinner, lunch, breakfast. We play cards so yeah them being here has made it a lot easier for me.”

Jaxson Paulo

21 year old Jaxson Paulo is a Kiwi from Auckland who moved to Australia when he was 12 to attend Keebra Park High School in Queensland.

Back in 2019 we interviewed Jersey Flegg coach Ben Rogers & he told us “Jaxson is a rock star who can do anything on the football field & will find himself on a wing in first grade for the next 10 years”.

S1 Ep11 Terry Fahey ‘The Redfern Express’, Blake Taaffe & The Rampaging Rabbitohs

This week we speak to “The Redfern Express” Terry Fahey & Souths young gun Blake Taaffe. We also have a chat to our host Grant Chappell about his life & times growing up around Maroubra Beach & Mavo gives us his story of that fateful day in 1987.

Terry Fahey

Terry Fahey first came to prominence as a Wellington winger when he played in Western Division’s win over Penrith in the final of the 1974 Amco Cup competition. Fahey was chosen for Country in 1975 but withdrew from the NSW side because of family reasons. Fast, and with the strength of a forward, he made his debut for Australia in a World Series match against NZ later that year but injured his hip after 13 minutes and had to be replaced. (Before the match had ended, Fahey showered, left the SCG and caught a plane home because he had to go to work). Signing with Souths in 1976 he again represented NSW and, the following year, played for Australia in the World Cup competition. Fahey made his Test debut in the First Test against NZ in 1978 but declined to tour with the Kangaroos, again citing family reasons. He was selected as a replacement for Larry Corowa in the Third Test against Great Britain in 1979 and, two years later, received another belated call-up when Kerry Boustead withdrew from the Second Test against France. Fahey spent seasons with Easts in 1981-82 and was a member of NSW’s State of Origin sides during this time. He was also the season’s leading try-scorer in 1982, scoring 15 tries. Fahey damaged a vertebra in his neck in 1980 and although he gave good service to battlers Canberra, the latter part of his career was hampered by recurring back pain. Fahey represented Country Origin in 1984 and, despite missing the entire 1985 season, overcame his injuries to play two further seasons with the Raiders.
